About this image:
Other titles: Laugh now but one day we'll be in charge
Location: The Ocean Rooms nightclub in Brighton 2002
The original work depicted a row of several chimpanzees and was displayed on three boards. It was sold by the nightclub in 2008 at a Bonham's auction for around £228,000. This was one of six Banksy pictures which once decorated the various rooms on both floors of the club but all have since been removed. This same stencil was later used with various other messages, including, "Keep It Real," and "Lying To The Police Is Never Wrong" and a whole line of ‘Laugh Now’ chimpanzees appeared on one of London Underground’s District Line trains in 2002.
The image was also amoungst the work of Banksy and other street artists shown at the Cargo club in Rivington Street, Shoreditch in 2001, Banksy’s first London exhibition. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, Banksy said, "They hung up some decorator’s signs nicked off a building site and painted the walls white wearing overalls. We got the artwork up in 25 minutes and held an opening party later that week with beers and some hip-hop pumping out of the back of a Transit van. About 500 people turned up to an opening which had cost almost nothing to set up.”
Another version was shown at the 2006 Barely Legal Show in Los Angeles.
