Banksy ended the year 2011 with a number of works in London, including this piece. His original placement of the work allowed for the backdrop of London's financial skyscrapers in the distance. The message was a satire on London's economic recession. The work was destroyed (at a point when it was estimated to be worth £150,000) when another street artist, ‘Hart of London’, drilled wooden slats over the top from which he hung his own artwork; a print on wooden boards showing a tub of butter with the slogan “Love is like butter …Spreadable.” This work was installed just in time for Valentine’s Day but was pulled down at the end of April. In an appeal to have his work returned, Hart said: “To me my artwork is priceless, but you could probably sell it for £400.” This was possibly an ambitious estimate, as a regular passer-by had a different opinion: “That tub of margarine was simply dreadful. I’m glad it got torn down.”
